001 Fred Parkes’ New Rhythm Kings – 1987 VJAZZ 001 – PAR 058

Clarinet player Fred Parkes, who, from the 1950s played with many important bands including Len Barnard, Kenn Jones, and the Powerhouse aggregation, produced this recording with his Dixieland-style New Rhythm Kings at the South Melbourne Town Hall in 1987. Tunes include Frenesi, My Walkin’ Stick, and Cherokee.

These recordings by broadcaster and writer C. Ian Turner were intended for release on his intended Jelly Roll label. The performances, now released for the first time on this CD, represent some of the best Dixieland-style jazz of the early 1940s. Trombonist Frank Traynor gained experience with Len Barnard and Frank Johnson before forming his own band, the Jazz Preachers (which included Roger Bell, Ade Monsbourgh and Graham Coyle) in 1958. In 2011 the Jazz Museum was bequeathed a set of 78-rpm acetate discs of a popular band from the 1940s and ’50s, Alan Bradley’s Jazz Kings. The band had never been commercially recorded so with the help of trumpeter Alan Bradley and the band’s pianist Graeme Bull, we were able to issue this band’s first commercial recording ever.
