001 Fred Parkes’ New Rhythm Kings – 1987 VJAZZ 001 – PAR 058

Clarinet player Fred Parkes, who, from the 1950s played with many important bands including Len Barnard, Kenn Jones, and the Powerhouse aggregation, produced this recording with his Dixieland-style New Rhythm Kings at the South Melbourne Town Hall in 1987. Tunes include Frenesi, My Walkin’ Stick, and Cherokee.

This is a selection of rare trad jazz from the acetate collection (recordings made direct to disc) of jazz entrepreneur the late Bill Miller. They include Roger Bell’s Jazz Band, Ced Pearce’s All Stars, Tom Pickering’s Good Time Music, The Barrelhouse Four, and Lazy Ade’s Backroom Boys all recorded in Melbourne in the late 1940s.

These recordings by broadcaster and writer C. Ian Turner were intended for release on his intended Jelly Roll label. The performances, now released for the first time on this CD, represent some of the best Dixieland-style jazz of the early 1940s. The Bands—the Backroom Boys, the Ramblers, etc. all include the legendary Ade Monsbourgh.

004 Frank Traynor’s Jazz Preachers – Trombone Frankie VJAZZ 004 – TRA 129

Trombonist Frank Traynor gained experience with Len Barnard and Frank Johnson before forming his own band, the Jazz Preachers (which included Roger Bell, Ade Monsbourgh and Graham Coyle) in 1958. The items on this CD are unissued takes from some of his commercial recordings. The 23 tracks include Charleston, Doctor Jazz, and Saturday Night Function.

The items on this CD were recorded live at the Esplanade Hotel in 1977. This New Orleans-style band, led by Californian trumpeter Tom Baker, first played at the Australian Jazz Convention in 1975 and was an instant success. Probably Australia’s two best-known jazz musicians and their bands are featured on this two-CD set. Very little Australian jazz was recorded in the 1940s but the Museum is fortunate to have located this rare selection of early recordings by this iconic group.
