Happy birthday Harry Price !Trombone player Harry Price turns 90 this week and AJM volunteer Bill Brown has written a few words about Harry – Henry Thomas[Harry] Price was born June 1930 in Melbourne. He learned trombone from trombonist Cy Watts and his horn playing and vocals were featured throughout his subsequent career with many bands on the Australian scene Early groups included The Melbourne Jazz Band and Neville Maddison’s group which played at Leggett’s ballroom. Between 1959 and 1966 Harry was part of the iconic Powerhouse Band led by multi reed player Kenn Jones. This group at times included Bob Barnard trumpet and Fred Parkes clarinet. Around this time Harry also played in a group led by pianist Frank Gow . Apparently in the 70s Harry accompanied a few visiting international artists –Johnny Mathis, Kathryn Grayson , Donald O’Connor and the Manhattan Transfer ,My own first hand experience of hearing Harry live was in the 80s when he was a member of the Melbourne Band The Storyville All Stars. At that time the band had a residency on a Sunday Afternoon at the Palace Hotel in Camberwell . As well as Harry on trombone and vocals the group comprised Ian Orr trumpet, Geoff Rule clarinet sax, either Graham Coyle or Johnny Adams piano , Tony Paye bass and leader Allan Leake drums. Beverley Sheahan provided vocals . I also have a DVD shot at one of the Montsalvat festivals . The personnel is the same plus the addition of Peter Cleaver on guitar or banjo. I also possess the Nif Nuf CD collection from the Bob Barnard Jazz Party series [1999/2008 ] .Harry appears at least on one of those sessions. So all in all Harry is a worthy member of the Australian Jazz Fraternity. Happy Birthday Harry.????????????????????????????. #jazz#australianjazz#australianjazzmuseum #trombone #birthday #90yearsold #happybirthday #congratulations #harryprice
