Ramer Lyra “Dulcie” Pitt, who performed as Georgia Lee (1921 – 2010) was an Australian jazz and blues singer and actress from Cairns. The proud Kalkodoon and Torres Strait Islander woman paved the way for Indigenous female musicians by becoming the first Indigenous woman to record a full length album in 1962, in addition to performing and recording with some of Australia’s best jazz bands for over 20 years. Georgia Lee is one of the artists featured in our exhibition Sweethearts, Rule Breakers and Money Makers: Australian Women in Jazz.Delving into our extensive archive, the Australian Jazz Museum presents Sweethearts, Rule Breakers and Money Makers: Australian Women in Jazz, fascinating displays highlighting the contribution of women to Australian jazz exploring the personal and professional lives of musicians including Thelma Ready, Georgia Lee, Judith Durham, and Margret RoadKnight.The displays can be viewed in the Collectors Cabinets on Realm ground floor and level 1 from 5 February to 24 March 2024.
