From the Australian Jazz Museum
William (Bill) Miller was the first jazz commentator and foremost driving force in creating a forum for jazz discussion in Australia and who, in 1943, formed “Ampersand” records. In returning from study in England before World War II he brought back a large collection of jazz records mostly unavailable in Australia and in 1939 began a weekly radio program on 3UZ called “Jazz Night”. Later renamed “Swing Night”, it continued up until the end of 1941. Although Bill wrote all of the scripts, the broadcasts were presented by well-known announcer Rowley Barley. The Jazz Museum contains all of Bill’s original scripts for the shows, and from these the Museum has reconstructed a program that was broadcast on the evening of 19th Feb. 1940 .The part originally read by the late Rowley Barley is read by ABC announcer Bill Passick (now deceased). The music tracks come from the Jazz Museum’s own “78” collection. A video of the bound Bill Miller scripts is below. Here then is “Swing Night”, as presented entitled: ”The Last Consignment “ – https://www.ajm.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/1.-LAST-CONSIGNMENT.mp3️#jazz #australianjazz #australianjazzmuseum #billmiller #swingnight #3uz #history #ww2 #ampersand #vintageradio
